Our Story

One hundred & twelve years ago in 1906, T.H."Bud" Harrell began working in the furniture department of Higginbotham Brothers & Co. selling furniture and caskets.

Shortly afterwards, he realized the need to pledge to provide courteous, dependable services to the families in their time of need. He realized families needed a place to keep a loved one until a funeral and/or burial could be arranged. Bud studied and received his Funeral Directors license from the Texas State Board of Morticians in 1907, becoming the first licensed Mortician in Erath Co., Texas. He then convinced his boss to let him convert part of the upstairs storage area into a funeral parlor to care for and hold an individual,so that families would no longer have to keep one at the family home.

In 1912 he studied and received his Embalmers License. In the 1930's his son, Page, had graduated from T.C.U. with BBA. He then attended Dallas Mortuary College and received his Funeral Director and Embalmers licenses and began working with his father at Higginbotham Brothers & Co. Together, they envisioned Dublin having a modern funeral home facility to serve the needs of families, as well as providing an ambulance service when needed. With Higginbotham's, they began the new facility at its present location and used the lanterns from their horse drawn hearse to light the entrance.

The building was completed in 1937 and Dublin had its own Funeral Home, "Higginbotham - Harrell Funeral Home".

In 1943 the Higginbotham interest was purchased by the family, and Harrell Funeral Home became the new name.

In 1953 "Bud" Harrell passed away.

In 1964 Jim, Page's son, graduated from Texas Tech with a BBA. He later attended Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science and received his Funeral Director & Embalmer's licenses and began working in the family firm.

In 1969, together they modernized the original building by placing hearse lights at the entrance and adding a chapel that seats approximately 250 people and was dedicated in memory of T.H."Bud" Harrell. They also added two Visitation Rooms, Wheel Chair Accessible Restrooms, a coffee lounge, new office areas and a state-of-the-art embalming/preparation area.

In 1989 Page passed away. In 1993 Andy, Jim's son, received his Funeral Director & Embalmers licenses from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science and joined the firm.

In 1997, Debbie Stevens Ware Harrell joined the firm.

In 2000 Debbie and Andy married and in 2001, she received her license from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Today Debbie, Andy, and Kaley operate the firm continuing to provide and assist to the ever-changing needs and desires of families. They still have the same vision that Andy's great-grandfather began in 1906 with the dedication in providing courteous, dependable service to each family they serve.
