John Lemmons Underwood was born in 1932 on the family farm in Dublin, TX to Fred Davis Underwood and Ethel Faye Underwood. He graduated from Dublin High School in 1950 and was named a Captain of the Football team and they won District in 1948 and was the President of his class. After High School, John attended Southwest Texas State in 1950. He entered the United States Navy from 1951-1955 where he served in the Korean War on a Medical Ship called the USS Haven. After the service, John attended Abilene Christian College where he obtained his degree in Psychology. He was also the President of the Christian Fraternity called the Galaxy Club.

On December 28, 1963 he married Hilda Anne Warfford in Dallas, TX. Together they had three sons, Sidney Curtis, John Mark and Fred Michael Underwood. John and Hilda decided to move back to Dublin, TX in 1973, where they built a home on the farm that had been in the Underwood Family since before the turn of 19th Century. John was a salesman in the hospitality, restaurant industry for many years as well as owning and operating the family farm.

John loved spending his time with friends and family with the many activities his sons were involved with in any capacity he could, from coaching sports to talking to young people about God. John loved serving the Lord and the Church in Dublin that his Grandfather (Abe Lemmons) preached at and helped build. He raised his family in the church and had a strong affinity to serve others, emulating Christ while making a difference in the lives of others. He had a great sense of humor and compassion and everyone knew big John with a quick joke as he never met a stranger in the life he lead. He will be missed by all of those that had the opportunity to know him and spend time with him.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda Underwood (New Braunfels), three sons: John Mark Underwood of New Braunfels, Sidney Curtis Underwood, married to Sheri Carol Underwood with children Shelby (and Dan) Freesmeyer living in Spokane, WA, Shayna Underwood of Ft Collins, CO, and Seth Underwood all of New Braunfels. John leaves behind three sisters: Darlene Harris of Corpus Christie, TX, Judy Hallmark (husband Joe) of Granbury, TX , and Patricia Bowlsby of Garland, TX. He was preceded in death by Martha Nuckles of Victoria, TX. John leaves a host of nieces and nephews and many people that loved and will miss him dearly.
