With heavy hearts and deep appreciation for a life well lived, James "Jan" Archie Nelson, who left us peacefully on July 12, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on January 28, 1940, Jan brightened the world with his presence, warmth, and unwavering devotion to his family. He married his light in life, Rella Gaye Nelson, on June 21, 1963, in Dublin, Texas. Together they shared 49 wonderful years and raised two children.
Jan was the son of Rosa Thelma Nelson and Archie Glynn Nelson, whose guidance shaped the man he became. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, brother, Ronald Nelson, and the love of his life, wife, Rella Gaye Nelson, leaving behind memories of their shared laughter, and enduring love that inspired all.
Jan's legacy continues through his daughter, Gaye Gibson, and her husband, Wayne Gibson, son, Tony Nelson, and daughter-in-law, Juakana Nelson, his grandchildren: Crystal Gibson, Mitchell and Kandey Gibson, Colton and Brooke Gibson, Calvin and Bethany Nelson, Sarah and Billy Paul Bolton, Ryder Nelson, and Laramie Nelson, and his great-grandchildren: Landon Nelson, Dawson Nelson, Cori Nelson, Atlas Bolton, Anthony Bolton, Mason Gibson, Rickey Gibson, and Archie Gibson.
Jan was known for his profound kindness, quiet strength, and remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. He dedicated much of his life to serving his community through Nelson Refrigeration and 16 years with Dublin Dr Pepper.
Above all, Jan's greatest pride was his family. His love and unwavering support were evident in everything he did, especially when cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events and rodeos. He never missed an opportunity to encourage them and celebrate their accomplishments.
Jan also had a lifelong passion for classic cars and motorcycles and was truly a jack of all trades. If something couldn't be fixed, everyone knew that Grandad could find a way. He looked forward to attending the Brown County Livestock Fair each year, a tradition that brought him great joy. More than any achievement, Jan's greatest legacy is the love he shared and the lasting memories he created with every generation of his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jan’s honor can be made to the to the Alzheimer's Foundation or local Humane Society.
